Google would develop an open-source alternative to Apple AirPlay

Google plans to eventually deploy the service on a multi-platform with multiple hardware partners.

The search giant introduced the first phase of this new technology on YouTube last week, which allows Android smartphone users to stream content to HD TVs connected to Google TV. But this is only the first step of this project.

Product manager of Google Timbo Drayson said that Google plans to Gigom give a boost to the industry. "There is no doubt that Google will make use of some technologies that were used in the unfortunate Nexus Q, which was abandoned before its sale."

One of the main features of the Apple AirPlay feature is the automatic detection - if you are connected to the same network as the Apple TV, you can share content with him. You do not have to register on Apple services, or to obtain a password. You just have to log in and use it.

Google Nexus Q had this technology, you can expect therefore that the company puts it to use in its next wireless streaming technology, provided it also introduces the suitable equipment. It may also be that a pure software solution.

Google Protocol "allows data to flow in both directions," said Drayson.

He added: "This would allow developers to create experiences of second screen for the live television. There is also the possibility to disseminate the project on TV, what you have on your laptop.

This is much like the technology SmartGlass recently launched Microsoft. Maybe Google is trying to compete with Microsoft and Apple finally not?

Of course, AirPlay is known that SmartGlass now but that could change in the coming months, to the extent that the products Windows 8 / Windows Phone 8 / RT are selling well. Then there is the fact that SmartGlass is available on iOS and Android.

AirPlay is a great service but it is very limited in its functions. I used it for a year and I can say unequivocally that the Apple platform, while perfectly functional and easy to use, is simply too useful to be locked for 99.9 percent of people BECAUSE it is directed only towards users of Apple and anyone else.

It works with Android in some cases - but will not be as good.

Solutions Microsoft and Google are much more open solutions and, therefore, useful for the vast majority of consumers - including me.
